The Academy, which in the last year has been criticized for #OscarsSoWhite had the largely uncomfortable televised “We didn’t win. Moonlight, you guys won” Onstage mishap by the La La Land’s cast and crew.
However we must give credit where credit is due. The Academy did well in choosing the first all black cast/low budget film, as the winner of 2017’s Best Picture Academy award. It seems as though this year the Academy made their best effort in trying to make this year’s Oscars as diverse as possible which brings the next question, did the Academy choose the film for the right reason(s)?
Moonlight falls against all pre-requisites known for customary Academy must-haves in terms of nominations and winners. If we take a look back at what the Academy is usually known for in choosing Best Picture we’d be sure to find some cinema concoction involving a long period piece perhaps in a warzone, with foreign influence, and a snappy title. Completely opposite of an all black cast with Black Queerness set in modern age America.
Hollywood does its best at portraying the events of our time or better said, to shed light on the under considered perspectives on to main page media. But as we’ve seen lately, having a politically charged progressive attitude doesn’t always mean much. Especially if these films tell the same story.
Interestingly enough, the Oscars, perhaps for the first time in history became such a different platform for viewers all over America. We consider, the enormous historical bias of the movie industry toward those that fall away from the colored category and the uneven progress of representation. If the mindless, nonsensical romantic film wins while avoiding all the ideals that matter in America right now, the award suddenly means nothing, if the politically stimulating, moving portrait of doubly marginalized black-life wins, then the award suddenly feels like it means everything to every viewer watching from home—no matter which neighborhood they’re watching from.
