Beyoncé Goes Holiday Shopping At Walmart, Gives Away $37,000 In Gift Cards
Beyoncé loves surprising her fans. Just a week ago, the R&B/pop superstar dropped her fifth studio visual album without notice and the surprises keep coming. Beyoncé made an unannounced visit to a Walmart in Tewksbury, Mass. on Friday evening for some holiday shopping.
The first thing the 32-year-old singer picked up was her new album, which she was very excited about. “This is exciting to see in person — the physical album,” Beyonce said.
Bey continued her shopping, picking up an item for her daughter Blu Ivy. “It would be good to get a little toy or something for Blu,” she said. “It will be cute for her — my baby,” she continued.
After she was done shopping, King Bey got on the store’s intercom to make a special announcement to the customers. “Walmart shoppers. It’s Beyoncé and I stopped by the store today because my record just arrived,” she said. “I wanted to give everyone a little gift. For everyone in the store right now, the first $50 of your holiday gifts are on me. Merry, merry Christmas from Beyoncé ”
According to sources, there were 720 customers inside the Walmart when Bey made her announcement which totaled $37,000 in gift cards.
This was certainly great PR for Walmart, as they were willing to sell her album a week after its digital release. “Walmart is happy to be able to carry her album and support all physical music,” says Walmart spokesperson Sarah McKinney. Meanwhile, Walmart’s competitor, Target, refused to sell the album.
“At Target we focus on offering our guests a wide assortment of physical CDs, and when a new album is available digitally before it is available physically, it impacts demand and sales projections,” said Erica Julkowski,a spokeswoman for Target.
