Today we had the honor of interviewing director Steven Caple Jr. in preparation for the premiere of his newest movie The Land. We discussed the trials and tribulations surrounding the filmmaking process, Caple’s inspiration, and a myriad of other things. Caple also provided this advice to young aspiring writers and directors, saying, “Just keep writing and keep directing. Keep making your art” You can watch the interview here.
Memorable moments from the interview include:
What were some of your inspirations for the movie?
It’s based off of two kids I know that were actually selling drugs- they were skateboarders out in LA and were using the money to sponsor themselves… So I found myself rooting for them but at the same time I found something wrong with the scenario because I had family and friends who went down the same route, thinking that drugs would be an outlet but ultimately would be caught up in it and that became the genesis of the story.
What was your favorite part of directing?
Definitely the actors, and, to get technical, sound. But so far it’s working with the actors and having that collaborative experience.
The Land premieres tonight in New York City at an exclusive red carpet screening. The release of the movie comes out everywhere in theaters Aug 4.
