With her cultivating energy and her strappy entrepreneurial beliefs, Shana Renee is playing the game her way and inspiring a young generation of women with the same aspirations as herself during the process.
Her strong bond with her family was the foundation her love for sports stemmed from and this passion would later put her in the position to launch a digital platform that would deliver current and relevant sports content-All Sports Everything, as well as founding her own women’s fantasy football league-Unmanning The Game.
“My older brother was an athlete and my family was very close and when I was younger my parents and I would always attend his games, even in college we would drive up to Boston to support him. I was always daddy’s little girl and every Saturday we would go up to the basketball courts and that would be our time to bond and my time to learn about sports and basketball. I always had a positive perspective of sports because it connected my family.”
Prior to blazing the entrepreneurial trail, Ms. Renee attained her bachelors degree from Spelman College and her masters from New York University acquiring enough knowlege to match her uncompromising ambition.
Her skills landed her a position in the marketing department for ESPN. While there she had the experience of working with athletes as well as working on commercials and gaining a broader experience of marketing and specifically how it relates to sports. Promoting different products and learning how to connect with the fans was also an important skill learned while working for ESPN. However, Shana recognized that it didn’t offer the growth opportunites she seeked and used that as an opportunity to step out on her own.
The Editor-In-Chief of All Sports Everything has mastered the ability of wearing different hats but this year has decided to give more attention to expanding her platform with Unamming the Game.
” All Sports Everything will always be my baby. Unmanning The Game started as an all female fantasy football league that I developed 4 years ago. Since then it has grown to include almost 50 women. This past year I decided to expand that platform and use it to create a video series that will highlight influential women. I’ll sit down with them and they’ll be able to share their stories on how they were able to step out the shadow of the men within the industry which is so hard to do. I really want to focus on that and blow that out this year.”
Her optimistic views on being a woman in a male saturated industry are liberating and held in high regards:
“I don’t see it as a hurdle, I see it as an opportunity. I think that people like me need to be heard. With the league being made of mainly African American males you need that African American female voice to add to the conversation. I think that there are people in this industry who are stuck in their ways and believe that if you are not a male or if you don’t have a resume that says I’ve played or I’ve coached, then your opinion isn’t valued as much. We just have to work that much harder to push through and gain that respect.”
For 2015, Shana will continue to build up her flourishing brand by taking more on air camera work as a commentator and offering more of an opinion on current events and hot topics in sports.
Shana’s advice to the young woman seeking to break into an industry:
“Be true to you, don’t allow the perception of whatever industry you seek to break out in stop you from thinking you can do it. If this is what you’re passionate about and you believe God put you here to fulfill that role then do it! Be knowledgable and be ready to put in the extra work because thats really what it’s going to take in order for you to be successful.”
