Clippers Owner Donald Sterling In Hot Seat, After Going H.A.M. With His Racist Remarks

Donald Sterling, the 81-year-old owner of the N.B.A.’s Los Angeles Clippers, opened a Pandora’s box of cultural issues this past weekend. Sterling made repugnant racist remarks in a recorded private phone conversation with his girlfriend V. Stiviano. Sterling one of L.A.’s wealthiest real estate moguls, and a prevalent face in the Los Angeles community, is in a pickle that Olivia Pope would not try to get him out of. During his rant Sterling mentions Laker great Magic Johnson, Jews, his own players and the ever-popular instagram. It is a crying shame that a man who has such nice children, who I have had the pleasure to meet, is such a bigot. The man has made money off of black people, but can’t have them around. What a phony liar, and troubled human being. The N.B.A. which had enjoyed a marvelous post-season until this point, is now faced with a huge problem that must be swiftly dealt with.

One of the jumping off points for his tirade was his annoyance with his girlfriend V. Stiviano. He was upset that she continued to have black Facebook friends against his will. In the recording Stiviano says “Honey, if it makes you happy, I will remove all of the black people from my instagram.” He replies, “You said that before, you said, I understand.” Wow! I guess there’s no age limit when it comes to stalking your girlfriend’s instagram followers. The wiley old man is on it, now I see how he got so rich. Stiviano then says, “I did remove the people that were independently on my instagram that were black.” Sterling replies, “Then why did you start saying that you didn’t?…You didn’t remove every—.” Stiviano replies, “I didn’t remove Matt Kemp and Magic Johnson.” I don’t blame her. I wouldn’t want to get a call from Magic, asking me why I’m not following him anymore? I may not be able to go to the movies ever again.

Things really took a dark turn when the subject of Jews got brought up. Stiviano says, “I think the people around you have a poison mind, and have a way of thinking.” Sterling replies, “It’s the world! You go to Israel, the blacks are treated like dog’s.” Stiviano replies, “Do you have to treat them like that too?” This is where Sterling’s vulgarity, and ignorance takes flight. He says, “There’s white Jews and black Jews, do you understand?” Stiviano asks, “Are the black Jews less than the white Jews?” Sterling replies, “A hundred percent, fifty, a hundred percent.” The guys so upset he can’t even get his percentages correct. He continues, “It isn’t a question—we don’t evaluate what’s right and what’s wrong, we live in a society. We live in a culture. We have to live within that culture…I don’t want to change the culture, because I can’t. Its too big.” He must be talking about another countries culture. Because here, in this country! Men and Woman such as, Fredrick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony, Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, Harvey Milk, Caesar Chavez, have all given American society their all, in order to fight the bigotry embodied by Mr. Candy, I’m sorry Mr. Sterling.

Another thing this racist didn’t think about is the way his family will be viewed. I had the pleasure of going to Los Angeles as a young adult and meeting a daughter of Donald Sterling. My cousin was a friend of the family at that time in 2001, and she had invited us to her home in Malibu, right off the Pacific Coast Highway. At the time I was a naïve young man who had recently started traveling, and was trying to leave his “project” mentality behind. Her and her husband were courteous, introduced us to a German beer named Spaten, and her husband taught us about a new phenomenon called e-trading. I was never made to feel uncomfortable or inferior to them, and all in all I had a good time. My hope was that they were nice people because they wanted to be, and enjoyed the east coast culture and vivacity that we brought to the table. However, after someone’s dad makes comments like that. One starts to wonder if they were being nice out of charity? Or, if they were being fake in order to tell their affluent friends they hung out with kids from the New York projects?

Moreover, how could his basketball team filled with black faces, and a black head coach want to play, or coach there anymore? Especially after he told his girlfriend in the same conversation to, “stop bringing black people to his games.” Then when she responded to the remark, by telling him that he has black players on his team. He responded with this statement, “I support them and give them and give them food, and clothes, and cars, and houses. Who gives it to them? Does someone else give it to them?” Talk about a plantation mentality gone wild. Sterling needs to be severely punished for his remarks. N.B.A. commissioner Adam Silver is being faced with his biggest task as commissioner, and must shut Sterling down! The Clippers team should be allowed to play with team uniforms that do not have the Clippers logo on them. Profits from that apparel should be dispersed throughout different civil rights organizations. In addition, all Clippers should be allowed to become free agents, if Sterling is allowed to keep control of the team.

Angel L. Quiles Jr. is a sports writer from New York, NY. His passion for professional sports was spawned in the school yards of East Harlem. There he learned how to play football, baseball, and basketball. East Harlem is also where he played little league baseball. At the age of twelve he made the 25th precincts police athletic leagues little league all-star team. That team was invited to play against Fort Lee, New Jersey's all-star team in a game at the original Yankee Stadium. The game was covered by Mr. G's show "Care for kids" a community based program on the old WPIX channel 11 in New York City. Angel never made it to the big leagues, but the show and his passion for sports made Angel realize that he didn't have to play the game professionally in order to be around it. He could become a sports writer, be able to cover the drama of sports, and hopefully make a living doing and watching what he loves.
