The Denver Broncos won Super Bowl 50 against the Carolina Panthers 24-10 with a dominant defensive performance.
A Super Bowl with expectations of a possible blowout by the Panthers, went into a classic defensive game. Usually in Super Bowls there are three types of games: grind-out, blowout and a shootout. Both teams were in a grind-out game from beginning to end. In the first quarter the Broncos started out on the first drive going down the field with Peyton Manning leading the way.
They came out short with a field goal giving them an early 3-0 lead. Then the next possession for the Panthers, NFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year Cam Newton threw a bullet pass to Jerricho Cotchery. From the looks of the video, It look as if it should have been called a catch, but not enough evidence to reverse the call.
Next play Newton was stripped by Von Miller, who ended being the Super Bowl MVP with two forced fumbles and a couple of sacks giving them a 10-0 lead. In the second quarter, Panthers’ Jonathan Stewart rushed for a touchdown, making it a three point game. Overall the whole game felt close, but costly turnovers from the Panthers made it more like a blowout than the score indicated. Broncos had two more field goals and a late rushing touchdown from C.J. Anderson off a fumble recovery by DeMarcus Ware on Newton. The game was over being up by 14 with little time in the fourth quarter against the number one scoring offense this season.
The Broncos defense played one of the best games in Super Bowl history. They made Newton uncomfortable in the pocket, putting pressure on him 21 times. He was shook by the hard hits and speed of the Broncos front seven. They won their third Super Bowl in franchise history and possibly gave Manning, who manged the game, the perfect ending for his career at 39 years old.
“Being in this game and playing in the 50th Super Bowl and certainly being victorious, it’s very special,” Manning said according to Newsday. “It’s a great sense of accomplishment for this team. I got a chance to talk to the team [Saturday] night and I kind of thanked them for letting me be part of the journey. It’s truly been a team effort and it was a team win tonight.”
