Tawny Goods, founded by longtime friends and menswear enthusiasts William Schwing and Jared Glatter, is a Los Angeles based men’s handmade leather boot and shoe company. After recently completing their primary funding goal of $50,000, we decided to ask them a few questions…
Tell us about your fundraiser? How do the proceeds benefit the company?
Currently, Tawny Goods is at the tail end of a Kickstarter campaign. Our goal was to raise $50,000, the proceeds of which will give us the capital we need to purchase a working inventory, expand our stockist list, and update our website, amongst other things. We hit our goal with over a week left, and now we’re nearing $65,000. We have a stretch goal of $75,000, giving our pledges the option to choose our standard leather soles, or the widely popular Vibram soles.
What methods of production do you use that still allow you to output shoes with great quality, while still being able to sell them at a fair price?
In reality, our production methods don’t give us the affordable quality that we’re known for, its where our products are made and the relationships we have. Before Tawny Goods had evolved into what it is today, I had left the United States to live in Guatemala for a time. While there, I discovered this little town of leatherworkers. Having had an interest in menswear, Jared and I started working with them directly to produce a couple of custom pairs of shoes for ourselves and other friends. More than 3 years later, our journey has taken us to Leon, Mexico, where we’ve partnered with fourth generation bootmakers, and use the same production methods and quality materials as other brands.
How do your pricing and production methods help you stand out amongst your competitors?
We founded Tawny Goods because we believe that everyone should have access to high quality, stylish footwear. Our price point sets us apart, not because there aren’t any other brands that sell footwear at this price, but because of the quality we bring. The men’s shoe industry is going through a really exciting time right now. Men are not only becoming more interested in fashion, the brands they wear and the way in which products are made, but we’re seeing a number of brands move beyond their category in new and inventive collaborations. Tawny Goods stands out for a number of reasons, price and quality being two components, but also our attention to detail with modern takes on classic styles.
Where do some of the design inspirations derive from?
For our debut line, we wanted to make sure we represented classic, time tested styles. Wingtips originated from the Scottish and English bogs, where the perforations in the leather allowed water to drain and keep the feet dry. The Toe Cap is an Oxford style, originating in England as well. The Loafer is Norweigan in origin, but was popularized by the Ivy Leaguers of the East Coast of the United States. Our inspiration started there, and the design direction we took was to modernize them in subtle ways without jeopardizing their history.
What are most of your shoes made from? What type of leather?
All of our boots and shoes are made from 100% full grain cows leather, with a full leather sock, insole, and outsole. We use EVA foam in our midsole and heel, a material typically used in athletic shoes and well known for its comfort.
