ESPN making big changes at they layoff 100 on-air personalities and will focus more on its content strategy.
This is shocking news considering how much time these individuals have put into the company. These are some of the high-profile people that really know their expertise on certain sports. According to USA Today, there was a memo said from the president of ESPN on this decision.
“A necessary component of managing change involves constantly evaluating how we best utilize all of our resources, and that sometimes involves difficult decisions,” ESPN president John Skipper said in a memo to ESPN staffers. “. . . These decisions impact talented people who have done great work for our company. I would like to thank all of them for their efforts and their many contributions to ESPN.”
The company also announced new features coming for the ESPN apps. Since they are focused on doing more digital-only content socially, it was inevitable for employees to not be part of the company. Versatility is an important skill to have in the field of journalism. Expect ESPN to be productive in the next few weeks for the other employees filling those roles.
