Jennifer Hudson & Harvey Fierstein to Headline NBC’s “Hairspray Live!”
NBC’s upcoming Broadway musical event “Hairspray Live!” just named two of its headliners. Oscar, Golden Globe, SAG and Grammy Award-winner Jennifer Hudson and multiple Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein have been announced to take the lead in the special holiday TV event this December.
Hudson is set to play Motormouth Maybelle and will begin preparing for the role just as she completes her current run in the acclaimed revival of “The Color Purple” as Shug Avery in her Broadway debut.
Harvey Fierstein, also credited as writer of the teleplay, will play Edna Turnblad, a role he created and won a Tony Award for in the stage version of “Hairspray.”
Following the phenomenal success of “The Wiz Live!,” this production will also add to the creative team television director Alex Rudzinksi (of “Grease Live!” and “Dancing with the Stars” 2005-2014 seasons).
“Hairspray Live!” will air on Wednesday, December 7th at 8PM EST in Los Angeles and is produced by Universal Television.
