The Jets found themselves with the steal of the draft by picking USC Trojan Leonard Williams at number six according to the New York Post.
Jet fans were actually satisfied with the pick in the draft. In the past the Jets always pick defensive players in the first round that questioned the importance of building a great defense rather than a solid balanced offense. But with the acquisition of Brandon Marshall and potentially getting a receiver in this deep draft class, General Manager Mike Maccagnan picked the best player available from their board.
Williams is a 6-foot-5 300 pounder with an outstanding work ethic, great energy level on the field and can be a good leader. He has a chance to be an excellent pass rusher and be part of one of the best front lines in the NFL. Former Jets Great Joe Klecko believes this can be a great defense with the addition of Williams, but can’t be overconfident.
This defense is gonna be absolutely phenomenal, it really is,” former Jets great Joe Klecko told The Post. “I just hope they don’t get filled with themselves, because they’re gonna be good, they’re gonna be real good. There ain’t no doubt in my mind.”
Although there is speculation of Jets Defensive Line Muhammad Wilkerson possibly either getting traded or leaving team, they have insurance with the pick of Williams. Wilkerson is playing in his last year of his rookie contract. Does he want to be part of something special or will he get the money he deserves as one of the top defensive players in the NFL?
