Kawhi Leonard Steals The Defensive Player Of the Year Award From Draymond Green
San Antonio Spurs’ Kawhi Leonard steals the defensive player of the year award from Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green for the second straight year.
Leonard is the first noncenter to win the award in consecutive seasons since Dennis Rodman did it from 1989 to 1991. He received 84 first-place votes from 130 sports writers and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Green received only 44 first-place votes and Hassan Whiteside of the Miami Heat had only two first-place votes.
This season while the Warriors had all of the headlines accomplishing an all-time regular season record at 73-9, the Spurs were right behind them. They finished 67-15, allowing a league low 92.9 points per game thanks to Leonard being a big factor to their success. He was 12th in the league in steals and had a career season in blocks almost one a game.
If the Warriors and Spurs meet in the western conference finals, it would be interesting to see how personal Green takes the matchup against Leonard.
