Director Justin Tippings is gearing up for his debut feature film KICKS set to premiere at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City next month. BLEU couldn’t be more excited about the journey of Brandon, an inner-city teenager from the Bay Area enthralled with owning the freshest pair of sneakers that money can buy.
Determined to win favor in the eyes of his best friends while simultaneously freeing himself from the shame of being poor and picked on by his peers, Brandon, played by Jahking Guillary, a new but undeniably talented actor and rapper out of Long Beach, CA, is the film’s hero caught up in present day concepts of manhood.
KICKS also boasts a heavy supporting ensemble of strong characters played by other familiar faces including Christopher Jordan Wallace, son of the late Notorious B.I.G. In addition, an accompanying soundtrack for the film is set to feature Bay Area favorites and a few Hip Hop classics. Keeping in touch with the Hip Hop community, the craze of sneaker culture and the hyper masculine expectations placed on young men, KICKS offers a unique perspective into the lives of a generation that merely wants to be accepted, loved, empowered and feel like they belong.
If you’re just as intrigued as we are, there are four ways to catch the world premiere of KICKS as it is featured in the newly announced U.S. Narrative competitive slate of this year’s festival submissions.
