“The main objective and the goal is just to get wins. I don’t think nobody cares about stats or anything like that,” guard Brandon Jennings said according to the Associated Press. “As long as we win we’re happy, but we’ve got to better. I mean we haven’t blew anybody out yet, so hopefully we can get a blowout game where other guys can play.”
Jennings, who had 19 points and three assists in the win against the Sacramento Kings, is absolutely right. The New York Knicks are winning games, but not in style. The team almost blew it against the Kings, who shot less than 35 percent from the field.
But despite squeezing out a win, are the Knicks trending up as far as being a good team in the NBA? In some ways they are because of their current record being 11-9. But here are other reasons for the team’s recent success.
One of them was the players and coaches meeting. After putting up an embarrassing performance against the Washington Wizards, they talked about playing at a high level and as a team. Since that meeting, the Knicks are 6-2. Scoring is becoming easy due to the ball moving, Carmelo Anthony playing within the flow of the offense, and the bench led by Jennings making key plays.
But another reason is the effort on defense, in most games. Physically, they are doing whatever it takes to get stops. Mentally, the team lacks in having a killer instinct on finishing games when they’re up by 20 early in the 2nd half, but still get the win. However, karma can definitely hit them later in the season, which is why they need to easily finish the weaker teams off for additional rest.
Still the team is in the playoffs if the season ended today. The Knicks have more talent than ever before, which is bailing them out in most of their wins. Everyone will figure out by the end of this month how good of a team this is. Maybe answers will be revealed on how far they can go in the postseason.
