It seems like yesterday when Dell Curry was playing actively with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Milwaukee Bucks, Utah Jazz, Charlotte Hornets and Toronto Raptors over 16 seasons in more than a 1000 NBA games. And now, his son Stephen Curry is bringing back the family legacy and keeping it alive by winning the NBA Most Valuable Player award for the second straight season. It’s amazing to see and compare how well this father/son combo have ruled the NBA over the years.
Dell Curry scored more than 12,500 points, nearly 2000 assists and a little more than 2600 rebounds in his career spanning 16 years. Halfway through his career, he became the NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 1993-94 season. Dell still leads Charlotte Hornets’ in points and three-point field goals ever scored.
His son Stephen Curry is the man of the Golden State Warriors. He will soon surpass his legendary father with his excellent records of 11,089 points, 2,149 rebounds and 3,393 assists in just seven seasons. He stands 19th in the NBA rankings with 1,593 three-pointers. He is among the first 50 three-point makers in NBA with a career three-point percentage of .444. But it’s not just them who have done well in the NBA.
Famous Father-Son Duos In NBA
Now that we are praising the Curry’s of their accomplishments, let’s take a look at some of the other popular father-son duos in the NBA.
The Bryant’s – Kobe and Jelly Bean, Dolph Schayes and his son Danny, Jimmy Walker and Jalen Rose, and Klay Thompson and his father Mychal are close competitors too for the title of the best father-son duo in NBA. But the consistency and numbers that Stephen with Dell has already showcased far beyond the other duos.
Kobe and Jelly Bean have put up 38,895 points, 6,306 assists, and 7,047 rebounds. They have also won some prestigious awards such as 11 All-NBA First Team selections, 18 All-Star appearances, 5 NBA Championships, 9 NBA All-Defensive First Team choices, and an NBA Most Valuable Player award all within a family! Though Kobe did most of the contribution, these numbers are yet to be beaten by any father-son duo. At the rate in which Stephen is going, he will surpass the Bryant’s scores in seven years.
Together, Dolph Schayes and Danny have made 27,218 points and 16,927 rebounds. Dolph has been the All-Star at least 12 times and was a member of both the NBA 25th and 50th anniversary teams.
Stephen has a strong competitor from his own team – Klay Thompson! Klay and his father Mychal Thompson have scored close to 20,000 points with 8,220 rebounds. While Mychal Thompson finished his 13 NBA seasons with 1,073 blocked shots. Klay, having completed five seasons in NBA, has 855 assists to his scoreboard. They both have won titles with their respective teams and Klay has made two All-Star teams.
All said and done, the Curry’s still are the favorites mainly because of their competing contribution to their family accolades and scores. If everything goes fine, and Stephen manages another eight to nine years of healthy play, there’ll be many more records broken, making his father a very proud man. Dell recently received the Bobby Jones Award at the Athletes in Action All-Star Breakfast in 2016. Let’s all wait for much more such fantastic duos capture the game’s spirit as wonderfully as these legends of the NBA did.
