As the 87th Academy Awards are approaching, Mo’Nique Imes, the 2009 Oscar Winner for Best Supporting Actress in the film Precious, states she was allegedly ‘blackballed’ in Hollywood.
According to an interview in The Hollywood Reporter, Mo’Nique said after her Oscar win, she only had four small movie roles and had offers from shows like Empire and the upcoming Richard Pryor biopic taken off the table.
I got a phone call from Lee Daniels,” Mo’Nique wrote. “And he said to me, ‘Mo’Nique, you’ve been blackballed.’ I said, ‘Why?’ And he said, ‘Because you didn’t play the game.
When Mo’Nique asked him what game is he referring to, he stood silent. Daniel was referring to her refusal to “campaign” for the role that she was nominated for. Daniels released a statement to THR concerning the matter.
Mo’Nique is a creative force to be reckoned with. Her demands through Precious were not always in line with the campaign. This soured her relationship with the Hollywood community…the consensus among the creative teams and powers thus far were to go another way with these roles. – said Daniels.
Hopefully this isn’t the end of Mo’Nique.
