The New York Giants start training camp on July 31 and the team is ready to take the next step. After not performing well last season despite Odell Beckham Jr. incredible rookie season, they look to be healthy and taking strives this season. Both offensively and defensively they should be balanced enough to make the playoffs and it starts out with how they will perform in training camp.
In training camp all eyes are on Quarterback Eli Manning. Manning, who is the two time Super Bowl MVP and championship had a great statistical season. He had 30 touchdowns, 4,410 yards and only 14 interceptions. He played well in his first time under the west coast offense. Now with Victor Cruz back and Beckham Jr. in camp, keep a close eye on their chemistry and durability. Overall they should be fine in the passing attacks and will probably even see more quick passes due to questions on the offensive line.
However the running backs for the team will be the key to the offense. They have more depth in that position and have three solid backs each with a different dimensions. the addition of Shane Vereen will give them a back who can catch the ball in curl routes and even in short passes. Manning would be less pressured and would not force the ball for an interception. Offensively they got the tools to be a top 5 offense and should develop chemistry throughout training camp and preseason.
The defense in training camp is questionable. They did hire Steve Spagnulo back as the defensive coordinator, but still lack in many pieces. The pick up of Kendrick Ellis from the New York Jets can give them another pass rusher for a Giants team that exceeds well in that department. They do have a great cornerback in Rodgers Cromartie and have competition over the other positions including safety, but this defense can’t be lethal without Pass Rusher Jason Pierre-Paul.
Paul suffered one of the most idiotic injuries a person can do with explosives in fireworks. He lost a finger and is in doubt to be part of training camp. The Giants did not talk to him about signing a big contract due to this injury and missing the deadline on offering one since he is a franchise tag player. Healthy Paul can do so much for the Giants and even get sacks and fumble recoveries. Defensively they should improve due to the hiring of Spagnulo, but can just be solid if Paul doesn’t come back in time. This team is capable of doing damage in the playoffs no matter what the seed is.
