The New York Jets Preseason begins tonight at 7:30 against the Detroit Lions. Fans get to see what Head Coach Todd Bowles does with the offense and defense.
Although over the course of training camp, there have been trouble with Defensive Linemen Sheldon Richardson and Quarterback Geno Smith. Richardson suspended for four games and Smith out 6-10 weeks with a broken jaw. Bowles is moving forward with these incidents and focusing on the task at hand.
Preseason has always been a way on evaluating the progress each team is doing from training camp. For the Jets it’s going to be interesting with the quarterback situation. They did start QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was the backup behind smith for the first preseason game. Particularity they will be running the football more and possibly throwing on play action passes. Fitzpatrick is a game managing quarterback and against a solid defense from the Lions, He won’t make mistakes.
But the offense can get more interesting when the fourth round pick and QB Bryce Petty plays. Petty came from a up tempo offense in Baylor. He’s still trying to get use to an NFL offense. He wasn’t in huddles a lot and not much from center. Petty has a great arm and good mobility. The Jets want to be careful with him and let me learn the offense, but he can possibly learn quick and wow the coaching staff. Offensively they should be solid with the addition of Brandon Marshall.
Defensively fans are waiting to see what this team can do with a loaded secondary. Since 2012 Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie will lineup on the same side with a lethal front seven. Although Wilkerson will not play this game, first round pick DL Leonard Willams makes his debut. Bowles likes to blitz a lot and play with two great corners which are Revis and Cromartie. His scheme is similar to Rex Ryan, but likes to change it up against opponents.
Overall the first game of the preseason doesn’t dictate what they will be in the season, but keeps an eye out on their potential from a Jet fans perspective.
