Love, money, sex, careers, and family; All things we search for, work to have, and juggle to maintain. Regardless of race, gender, or sexuality it’s no denying that dealing with these issues is universal. With television flooded by ratchet reality, scandalous love affairs, and moody vampires with perfectly quaffed hair, it’s refreshing to finally witness realistic storylines from a unique perspective. Based in San Francisco, Three gay gentlemen face the regular norms of life in the well-produced HBO Series, “Looking”. When you have a producer by the likes of Andrew Haigh who’s repartee includes “Gladiator”, and “Black Hawk Down”, it’s not surprising that the cast would be equally amazing.
In a sea of talented actors this particular fish happens to come from across the pond. London native and Thespian O-T Fagbenle grew up as a theatre kid starting out at the age of thirteen. Perfecting his craft at The Ritual Arts he later starred in plays such as William Shakespeare’s adaptation of “Macbeth”. With his heart rooted in theatre, O-T explains that television was the furthest thing from his mind. “I never considered acting beyond theatre so the transition was challenging at first nonetheless rewarding.” Playing the focused, career driven, home body Frankie J Alvarez who’s ready to settle down with his wild, free-spirited partner, we witness the rare glimpse of gay relationships portrayed on TV. Although his sexual orientation differs from his character, he shares an enlighten view of how we compartmentalized life. “For instance, I’m half black, half white. In America im considered black but in Africa Im considered white. Just like race I feel like people dwell on putting everything in boxes.” Chuckling at the absurdity, he finishes by saying “love is love and we need to live for what we like”.
Talented, worthy, and humbled are just the few to describe this Looking star. Holding eyes everywhere hostage of his stellar performance of this weekly drama, Bleu is fortunate to have spoken with the star. Raving about the series as he describes “thrilling” you can create your own opinion simply by tuning in every Sunday @ 10:30pm on HBO.
