Carolina Panthers’ Cam Newton looked as stylish as any premier NFL player in the league, basically looking like the Riddler from Batman during the post-game press conference. But he was also frustrated by the lack of calls against him, thus calling out the commissioner of the NFL.
“I just can’t keep accepting, ‘Oh, we missed that one,’ or ‘I apologize for doing that’ or ‘I didn’t see it.’” Newton said according to The Guardian. “That’s horse crap. Coming from a person who’s been fined before, coming from a person who everybody’s expecting a lot from, I’m still going. But yet, when you constantly see the hits, when you constantly see flags being picked up and flags not being thrown, and to see other quarterbacks getting it for lesser physical hits, it’s taking the fun for me out. I’m just being honest about that.”
In all honesty, Newton has a right to be frustrated. A guy, who is big and strong that can move as well as Russell Wilson, should get calls. Everyone knows when Shaq was in the NBA, he got punishment by other players for being a physical freak. When defensive players in the NFL tackle a 6’5 245 pound man hard, it’s tough for referees to throw flags. He’s not forcing his will most of the time on the defenders, but at least protect him from concussions and lingering injures. The reigning MVP needs support from the commissioner on making these changes.
Football is a contact sport. The quarterback is the most important player in the league. They need to protect Newton at all costs, for the present and future of the NFL. More quarterbacks that are getting stronger and faster will be in that category of being officiated differently than the pure pocket passers (Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Eli Manning). Maybe they will look into that, and be fashionable during the post-game post conference.
