Power Behind the Power: Darius Bradley

Darius Bradly Cover Cover PIcture

“Behind every celebrity there is an assistant”. Not a lot of people remember or give credit to the right hand man that plays a big part to the artist you may be a huge fan of. Just imagine what these celebrities go through on day-to-day bases, and then think about how much their personal assistants are linked to their workflow.

Darius Bradley, personal assistant and road manager from Chicago, assist clients like Saycon Sengbloh, who played on the Broadway show “Eclipsed,” Gbenga Akinnagbe who played on “The Wire,” and former celebrity client, whom Darius has worked with for five years, Rotimi who plays on the TV Show “Power.” Darius gave us a behind the scenes visual for what it is like to be in his shoes, and take on a career like his, and must I add being a personal assistant has a lot of perks to it.

Darius started out in 2009 as an intern at Hot 97 and then progressed to other internships like Warner Bro Records, Atlantic Records, Universal Attractions Agency, and celebrity photographer Kawai Matthews of Air Philosophy in L.A. His hard work and dedication lead him to the position he is in now, as well as passing on a 2nd year 5K tennis scholarship to pursue his drive to success. He is an example of following your dreams and taking a risk in order to get what you want. When it comes to working with different celebrities there are plenty of hats to wear in order to keep their lives organized, this is Darius’s specialty. He shared with us that there is never a typical day being a personal assistant/road manager, “one day you can be at their house, getting their wardrobe together, and the next day you can be on a flight somewhere.”

Pretty busy I’m sure, but being able to have a job where you can travel and meet different people is a amazing experience. As this job description may have its awesome qualities, there is a lot of pressure under the belt of the personal assistant when it comes to making sure everything is in tact. As for Darius, the key duties that he mention are making sure deadlines are meant, the celebs company is being taken care of, as well as having the hotel rooms, cars, and food on point. Time management is a large key to this role.

Now, how does Darius keep his clients pleased? As I asked him what is his main goal for the clients he represents, he simply says, “making sure they are happy”. That is all it is, the happier the client the better your job is for you. The only factor these clients should focus on is showing up and showing out, the plan is mapped out by the assistant. When it comes to finding that special talent in the clients Darius represents, he says “he looks for that “IT” factor, and that comes with the full package: stage presence, talent, and that special look, which he saw in Rotimi way back in 2010.

However, being on top of your game is a switch that should be turned on at all times because anything can happen that can mess up the clients’ schedule. Darius speaks on an experience he had with one of his clients proving how hectic a situation may get. On his way to Chicago with his client Rotimi and dancers the trip did not go as planned. Long story short, their flight got delayed and then shut down because of bad weather, so everyone had to take at least three different trains and come to find out the flight they were suppose to get on took off 30 minutes later after they left. Certain incidents are not under the assistants control, but Darius believes it would not have been a good look to cancel the BET Music Matters tour. So, Darius being the right hand and all took action and made sure that they got to their meetings on time, without being a minute late. Hey! It’s all a part of the job, fast thinking and quick on your feet.

More to gain, and less to lose when it comes to taking on this career opportunity. Darius wants to inspire others towards making a career in this field. He gained a bundle of good relationships with people in the industry and mentioned his former client Rotimi and himself experienced their first opening act show in London with rapper 50 Cent.

“2015 is that year I broke through”, Darius indicates that his opportunities started to come through for him, and helped him out in the long run. He also states that he does not regret giving up his scholarship and passing it up for music, and the position that he is in now. One word that can describe Darius is “grinder!” He makes sure the job is done. As he may love his job, he wants to inform people that it is a lot of work, but it is definitely worth it. This career field is a very powerful position in the entertainment industry, and looking into Darius’s life I would definitely consider it. Darius himself also has some projects for everyone to look out for, which is his television project showing the visual insight of what he does as a personal assistant/road manager sharing the experience targeting college graduates, undergrads, and interns. He is also actively working on his memoir book sharing his rise from the start back in 2009 to present. Sounds very interesting right! For those who are considering this career path, remember, in the words of Darius Bradley, just make sure to “stay on your toes like tennis”, but to make it even easier here is Darius personal list for 10 ways to be successful.
