Is this going to be an unpopular opinion? Probably.
In light of the Sausage Party trailer, we went to do a little research about the new Seth Rogen flick with a hard R rating. And what we found was conflicting at best. Some critics are loving the movie! Others acknowledge that it is offensive and therefore not for everyone, but that it also makes up for its profanity with ensuing hilarity. Still others are wholly against the movie, saying that the movie is just a sorry excuse for moviemaking disguised as Rogen’s “humor.”
Sausage Party employs rape scenes, racist tropes, and just bad humor in order to ask a theological question of whether believing in a higher power is sensible or stupid. Critics say that the blend of stupid and smart is delightful, but the fact that the movie goes so far into “stupid” territory is hard to swallow, especially with the sheer amount of bad food-based puns. And then the final moments of the movie? A food orgy.
Basically, Sausage Party is pointless, offensive, and just plain bad. Seth Rogen has had its hits and now it’s time to throw in the towel. Offensive humor is nice in moderation, but after a while it becomes a question of just what beliefs does the mind behind the film have? Any answers, Mr. Rogen?
