Sony announced their slate of free games for the month of June this week via the official Playstation Blog.
Sony’s camp will be adding 6 games across 3 platforms to their Instant Game Collection in June. On Playstation 4, next month’s games include Skulls of the Shogun: Bone-A-Fide Edition and Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes.
Skulls of the Shogun: Bone-A-Fide Edition is a re-release of a turn based strategy game featuring zombified samurai. The game received mostly solid reviews when it was released in early 2013. It is a decent effort to counter to Microsoft’s Massive Chalice giveaway, even if it’s not as high profile Microsoft’s June freebie.
Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes is a prologue/premium demo for the upcoming fifth installment of the Metal Gear franchise. The game sees protagonist Big Boss, (this time voiced by actor Kiefer Sutherland), infiltrate a Cuban military base to free two close friends captured behind enemy lines.
The game stirred a bit of controversy when it was first released last March. Ground Zeroes was released as a $40 game on PS4 and Xbox One for what many critics considered a two hour experience. Despite the questionable value proposition, the game did quite well, shipping one-million copies across four platforms in its first month according to its publisher Konami. Now Playstation Plus subscribers will be able to download the game for free starting this June. The full game, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is expected to be released Sept. 1 in North America.
On Playstation 3, PS Plus users will be able to download Call of Juarez: Gunslinger and Cloudberry Kingdom free of charge. Gunslinger, an arcade-y western themed first person shooter, was very well received for its inventive story elements and well-paced combat mechanics. Cloudberry Kingdom is a procedurally generated platformer first release in 2013 and received mostly positive reviews for its art direction and gameplay.
Playstation Vita owners will receive indie titles Futuridium EP Deluxe and Super Exploding Zoo for free. The Playstation Blog describes Futuridium EP Deluxe as “a psychedelic, retro-inspired shooter with crazy action, puzzle elements, and a bumping electronic soundtrack.” Super Exploding Zoo is a tower defense puzzle game from developer Honeyslug who worked on 2014 Playstation exclusive Hohokum. Both games did well critically and are playable also on PS4 via the Vita’s crossplay feature.
All six games will be available free of charge to Playstation Plus users until June 30.
