Team U.S.A. will play their first World Cup match against Ghana today in Natal, Brazil at 6pm ET. Ghana has eliminated the Americans from World Cup contention in each of the last two World Cups, and the U.S. will be looking to avenge those losses.
This is Jurgen Klinsmann’s first World Cup as the head coach of the American side. Klinsmann was a champion with his native German squad in 1990 as a player, and coached Germany to a semi-final appearance in 2006.
The United States has been waiting in anticipation to see if Klinsmann’s European soccer ideologies will work with American players. Klinsmann has been criticized for snubbing “Captain America” Landon Donovan the United States most decorated soccer player by not placing him on the team. In addition, for mentioning that the Americans chances of winning the World Cup are, “not realistic”
Realistic or not Klinsmann has a lot to prove. He is highly paid, and Americans want to see results. Americans understand that they have been placed in what is being labeled the “group of death” because of the quality of teams they have to face. However, will not accept any excuses. “If you are going to become good you have to beat the best, and you have to change history” Said avid soccer fan Safiyyah Long of Brooklyn, New York.
Today the American soccer players have a chance to shine like the Sun on Mercury. They have a chance to beat a rival, and make the rest of the world take notice of how serious they are about soccer, not just the four main American sports. They need to be fast and strong on the pitch and take the game to those Black Stars from Ghana, because Ghana is supremely confident that they will crush the U.S.A. The Ghanaian fans expect to win, and forward Asamoah Gyan will be ready to give the Americans nightmares again.
Therefore, it is up to goalkeeper Tim Howard to try to keep a clean sheet. Midfield leaders Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley need to control the pace of the game, and keep everyone focused. Last but not least, forward/striker Jozy Altidore has to put any chances he gets to score in the back of the net.
GO-GO! U.S.A. and show those Ghanaians that ya’ll came to play.
