The Urban Fever Radio Show
Interviewer: Mz Rizk
Artist: Anthony Hamilton
Anthony Hamilton: Mz Rizk, how are you?
Mz Rizk: I’m good Anthony. How are you today?
Anthony: I’m taking a rare break so I’m great. I’m having a good day.
Mz Rizk: Your coming down for Soulfest, is this your first time in Australia?
Anthony: Yes! Very first time, I’m excited about it. I want to be part of something extraordinary for you guys – so count me in!
Mz Rizk: What have you heard?
Anthony: I’ve heard it’s amazing. All my peers that have been down there they said I won’t ever want to come back and I was like geez.
Mz Rizk: How are you feeling about music at the moment?
Anthony: I love music. Whether I am writing it, or listening to it or dancing to it. It’s always beautiful to me. We can stand around and say hey music is not what we want it to be, music is not this and that but I’m in love with music. So wherever the music goes that’s where I’m at, so I’m excited about it.
Mz Rizk: When you come down to Australia are you bringing a band that you have been working with over the years?
Anthony: Yes! I’m bringing my funk. Some of the guys I’ve been working with for almost eight years or something.
Mz Rizk: The last time I saw you perform was in 2011 at Chastain Park with Jill Scott for her block party tour. So I have been fortunate enough to see you perform.
Anthony: What! Wow.
Mz Rizk: You are such beautiful performer and very charismatic. When you perform your songs live it’s just an amazing experience especially for fans of R&B and soul. Which brings me to the question Anthony, how do you feel about genres at the moment? A lot of artists really don’t like the term neo soul. You’ve won awards in the urban adult contemporary genre. How do you feel about that? How would you describe yourself without thinking about what the media has placed?
Anthony: I just call it good music. Good R&B, good soul music. Just good music, just good listening music that’s all it is. There’s no hidden ingredient. Only thing that makes it special is just the passion and the love and experience. So that’s good story telling – good music
Mz Rizk: And a lot of your songs are they personal? Because a lot of them are about love and relationships…
Anthony: Yeah, a lot of them. Yeah there is always something personal in every one of them unfortunately.
Mz Rizk: What are your current thoughts on the evolution of soul music at the moment?
Anthony: I think soul music – there’s not enough of it. But I’m glad it’s still alive.
Mz Rizk: Well with artists like yourself you keep pushing. You’ve released a number of albums. Are you working on another one?
Anthony: Of course, right now and a Christmas album!
Mz Rizk: What songs have you chosen to cover? Or are you creating originals?
Anthony: Well I have a lot of originals as well and I have Chestnut. I’m working on a rendition of drummer boy that is incredible. What else, Silent Night and I also have a duet with Nat King Cole. I have a lot of remakes and a really good original song that will be classic. I feel like they will be classics.
Mz Rizk: So you’re working on your Christmas album and your new album at the same time. Are you working with the same producers and the same band?
Anthony: I’m working with a lot of the people that I know get it and respect what it is that we do as musicians. And I’ve pulled in a few new people to kind of open it up a little bit and just branch out, to give my fans something to look forward to.
Mz Rizk: You have sold more than 19 million albums are you happy with where your career is at the moment?
Anthony: Yeah, wow I’ve never counted. But that’s awesome, manthat’s a lot of records.
Mz Rizk: Will your performance at Soulfest be similar to the set lists you are currently performing over in the United States?
Anthony: You know, it’s a different feeling we’re excited. You guys haven’t even had the first show yet so we got to go back to where you first heard me and let you guys, you know, experience that.
Mz Rizk: Are you planning on changing it from each state that you visit or will it be the same show in each state?
Anthony: I haven’t even thought about it. I’m pretty much pretty raw on stage. Some nights we have a list and we will go by it, some nights it’s like I tell them hey I don’t wanna do that song, let’s do something else and my band they’re so good. We just feel the crowd out, I let them know what I’m feeling and most of the time my instincts are pretty right.
Mz Rizk: Amazing. Well we are looking forward to having you out here for Soulfest!
Anthony: I look forward to it! Tell the people I’m excited, and I look forward to it. Tell them I’m on my way and we’re gonna’ talk when I get there, and dance and sing.
Mz Rizk: So it will be a high-energy show?
Anthony: Oh yeah! Thank you so much I look forward to being there.
