Tiara Thomas. You may not know the name, but I’m sure you know the voice. Remember the girl singing the chorus on Wale’s bad, yup, that’s her. As a new artist it’s safe to say she has already created quite a buzz. Earlier this year gossip and rumors were flying around when Indiana star signed to producer Rico Love’s Division 1 Music label, when it was believed she was signed to MMG rapper Wale. Putting the past and drama behind her, Thomas put out her debut ep “Dear Sallie Mae” on October 8th. The five track ep is an array of collective effort that doesn’t really have a solid sound.
The disc opens up with the title track ‘Dear Sallie Mae’ where the first words uttered are “Sallie Mae is like the rudest bitch ever” referring to the student loan lender. The song will be relatable to college students where the reality of pursuing higher education and also making a living is strained with debts you must pay to a certain student lender.
As said before there really isn’t a sold sound to the disc, which may be she was aiming for, but it might leave the listener confused. The track ‘Gang Sign’, where Smith is rapping, is a track that doesn’t fit into the ep.
Thomas strong points are where she introspective, such as my favorite track ‘Tell Me Something’ where she ask for honesty and ask herself “Cause if you’re not telling secrets
Why the cops show at my little cousin’s house
And lock him up just for some reefa
Two years, haven’t seen him, haven’t seen him
Every night before I go to bed I pray to Jesus
And I say to him”
Overall all it’s a nice introductory to talent that is Ms. Smith and leaves the listener wanting more. Her album is slated to drop next year. Expect big things from this new emerging talent
